The movie is called “Traitor,” and the implication is that the main character, played by Don Cheadle, has betrayed his own country. But it’s nowhere near that simple. Some think he’s a traitor to the United States while others think he’s a traitor to Islam. He may be a traitor to his own beliefs, his loyalties divided between his Muslim faith and his American upbringing. By the end of the film, no one is any closer to understanding what he believes, himself least of all. He’s a double agent frequently confronted by conflicting ideologies, and it’s slowly but surely tearing him apart. One way this movie succeeds is that we’re able to feel for this character no matter what side he’s on; we can sense the anguish he feels, the torment of being a misfit in every culture he immerses himself in. We see in his face the unease and guilt he’s forced to live with everyday.

Cheadle plays Samir Horn, who was born in Sudan but raised in the United States. Thirty years ago, his father was killed in a terrorist attack, although it’s unclear which side was responsible; it may have been an anti-Muslim faction, but it may also have been devout Muslims who opposed his beliefs. Whatever the case, Horn is now a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant for the United States Army, someone trained to infiltrate terrorist organizations and gather information. It seems his loyalties have shifted; while in Yemen, he’s caught selling detonators to a group of jihadists, and after a brief shootout, everyone is arrested. In prison, he befriends Omar (Saïd Taghmaoui), who is apparently in league with people on the outside, people willing to risk incarceration or death to free their brother Muslims. A frenetic jailbreak ensues. Not long after, Horn becomes entangled in a terrorist conspiracy, one that would result in several major attacks on American soil.

Two FBI agents have been assigned to locate and arrest Horn. One is Roy Clayton (Guy Pearce), who, interestingly enough, once considered World Religions as a college major. He claims to take his own Christian faith seriously, but unlike Horn with the Koran, we never see him reading from the Bible or quoting any of its passages. We’re never told what Max Archer (Neal McDonough) believes, although it’s obvious that, as far as his job is concerned, he’s all about getting results as quickly as possible; in an early scene, he gets impatient with Horn and subsequently punches him in the stomach. Clayton is much more calm and collected, and he understands that you get information from a suspect by pushing his buttons, not by letting him push yours. Indeed, Horn is a tough nut to crack, probably because he knows how to keep secrets from both sides.

To describe the plot any further would not only give too much away, it would also require a lot of explaining, more so than anyone would be willing to read. As Horn says, “The truth is complicated.” It would be more accurate to say that the truth is elusive, simply because I’m not convinced he knows what the truth is. He probably no longer knows which side represents good and which side represents evil. His beliefs are divided between what he reads in the Koran and what he sees going on; one passage states that killing one man is like killing all mankind, yet he’s surrounded by Islamic extremists who commit murder to get their point across. He’s serious about his faith, but it’s clear he doesn’t always understand it. He certainly doesn’t understand how certain ideas can be misconstrued out of all reason, such as Takfiri, or blending in. A Pakistani terrorist named Fareed (Aly Khan) baffles Horn by saying that jihadists living in America drink alcohol and eat pork in order to blend in. Both acts go against Islamic beliefs.

Horn would probably argue that murder, no matter how justified, also goes against Islamic beliefs (I would make the same argument, although I’m well aware that many people would not). If there were no jihadists, if terrorism were to be eradicated entirely, Horn would not need to be a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant. He would not have to infiltrate enemy hideouts and pretend to be on their side. Only then would his mind be at ease; he could worship in peace without having to worry about suspicious activity in American and Muslim communities. Is it unreasonable to suggest that the vast majority of Muslims long for the same peace of mind? I don’t think so. Neither is the idea that there’s a gigantic difference between jihad terrorists and those of Islamic faith.

That may ultimately be the point “Traitor” is trying to make, although it’s difficult to tell with a story actively trying to be ambiguous. Director Jeffrey Nachmanoff and producer/co-story creator Steve Martin (yes, that Steve Martin) have crafted a political drama that forces the audience to think really hard, more about the main character’s beliefs than about the actual plot. Themes of not belonging and divided loyalties are certainly not new, but that doesn’t mean they’re no longer used effectively; “Traitor” succeeds on many levels, not the least of which is Don Cheadle’s believable performance. He above all else is what gets the story off the ground, allowing it to be much more than a run-of-the-mill thriller. He adds genuine emotional touches in the subtlest of ways, from precise eye movements to random breathing patterns. Essentially, he makes it real, especially since he never reveals which side his character feels most connected with.

Traitor is a fantastic thriller starring Don Cheadle as Samir Horn, a Muslim who was born in Sudan and moved to America as a teenager. He grows up to be a Special Forces soldier for the US, and as the movie begins, we see him moving through the Middle East selling explosives.

His fate crosses with two FBI agents, played by Guy Pearce and Neal McDonough. Soon the two are crisscrossing the globe hunting Samir, who is becoming more and more involved with a cell led by a terrorist mastermind.

The film is written and directed as a great thriller with enough action and suspense to keep you ocuupied and guessing, but not to the extent that it comes off like a routine action movie trying to be more than it is. The film has several twists and surprises and keeps the viewer engaged throughout.

But everything is held together is by Cheadle, who burnishes his reputation as one of Hollywood’s greatest talents. His Samir is at once devious, treacherous, loving, compassionate, stubborn, and dangerous. Traitor is a great film, but it would not possess the same impact with a lesser talent as its star.

“Cotton Comes to Harlem” is a solid, funny, and most of all, cool movie which was, besides “Shaft” and “Coffy,” to set the trend of the black movies of the 70s. Look how Godfrey Cambridge and Raymond St. Jacques walk and talk, and you’ll know the meaning of “style.”

Based on Chester Himes’s novel, the film follows the two super-cool cops who suspect that Rev. O’Malley’s “Back to Africa” campaign (minimun entry 100 dallors needed) is a fraud to steal money from people living in Harlem. But things get complicated when, during the rally, the organization is attacked by masked gangsters who took the money of $87,000, and that was done under the nose of the very cops. Determined to nail the criminal, and possibly the preacher himself, the detective Gravediffer & Coffin start their investigation, and do it in their own fashion.

The film keeps the fast pace with a tightly knit web of characters including Reverend’s beautiful wife Iris. But most charming part of the film remains the same today: its being funny and smart. In fact, you will see among violent actions suddenly unexpected humor. The best thing of the film is, in my book, the car chase scene that include “the cemetary chase” and “a flying guy.” The film also ends with a showdown in the Apollo Theater (though I don’t know whether the inside scene of it was really shot there) And the real Harlem locale of the 70s, which helps to create the authentic atomospher, would be someday a precious record of the New York City.

In short, this is a film Quentin Tarantino with his known flair for characters and story might have shot 30 years ago. Some part of the film look, I admit, dated today when you see women’s parts are little better than secondary, just catering obligatory sex scenes. Still, those scenes have been given slight touch of humor, that might almost compensate for the lack of the screen goddess like Pam Grier. Buy this one, along with “Coffy” and “Shaft” and perhaps “Across the 110th Street.” That makes a quick course of learning what the blaxploitation films are all about.

Those two main charaters are to reappear in “Come Back Charlston Blues,” which is, unfortunately, not as good as this one.

Seeing Judy Pace in this movie is worth the price of admission alone! The movie itself has an interesting storyline and it does bounce around a little but is definately entertaining. This movie isn’t as cliche as many of the other films in this genre. There are some good chase scenes and it was interesting to see Redd Foxx pre ‘Sanford and Son’. I would consider this one of the most important movies of the blaxploitation genre.

Because of its length, you pretty much have to be a serious dog lover to stick with and appreciate this series, which recounts multiple episodes of rescue, rehabilitation and retraining of neglected, wounded or misbehaving canines of all shapes, sizes and ages. Most of these doggies are pretty cute and appealing. The caregivers, themselves, are an attractive and idealistic bunch who are clearly making major contributions to animal (and by extension human) welfare. The Michael Vick saga plays a role in all of this and adds to the up-to-date feel of the film.

First, I want to address the price issue. I was wondering myself when I purchased this set why it is so much more expensive than the first one National Geographic: Dogtown – Second Chances. Here’s the answer: this one has 5 episodes. Second Chances has three.

In these 5 episodes, watchers get a very in depth look at leg amputations and how they affect the dog, the therapy involved, the surgery. I especially liked watching the determined pooches do the underwater treadmill. Episode one has a leg amputation as does episode five. The second episode introduces a very loveable, but very hurt dalmation. This one is not for the faint of heart, as his wounds get treated and restitched. Neither is a tumor case in episode five. Both of these dogs were rescued from two separate hoarding situations. (That crazy cat lady is no longer a laughing matter, people!) Episode three is about the much publicized Michael Vick dogs. The Vick dogs are pit bulls that have been trained to fight and have never known a loving or kind hand in their lives.. until now. There was one particular dog in this episode that touched my heart, Cherry. Cherry has self esteem issues as a result of having been a “bait” dog. Cherry also educates DogTown and its viewers about a disease called Babesia, much similiar to the human HIV.

My own dogs want to give a “bark out” to Knightly from episode four. I kid you not when I say they perked up and paid attention everytime this loveable weimaraner came on screen. His human parents grew too old and frail to take care of him. DogTown sees he gets a new home.

It’s spacious to examine that both seasons and the pilot are finally in one package. “Twin Peaks” was a wonderful expose that was quite experimental for its time (1990-1991) that at it’s worst was better than most everything else on TV. I wish the indicate could have survived longer, but with an unpleasant second season time slot – Saturday at 10pm – it had no chance. The revelation of Laura Palmer’s killer took the wind out of the sails somewhat honest nine shows into the second season, but the upright theme of Twin Peaks was about the atrocious in the woods that took the effect of the killer and the seamy underbelly of what appeared to be everyday small-town life. The execute of Laura Palmer was unbiased the surface of that. Three somewhat pointless episodes followed the one that revealed Laura’s killer, but then the point to bounced serve with the Windham Earle storyline. Unfortunately many viewers had stopped watching the prove by then. Perhaps the lasting legacy of “Twin Peaks” is that it made series with unique subplots, long legend arcs, and oddball characters more acceptable to the networks. For example, I don’t contemplate that “The X-Files” could have made it to the air in 1993 had it not been for “Twin Peaks” preceding it and succeeding. I rented this with high expectations but ended up stopping it halfway through. I had no plan that the disc would be a complete recap of the previous action. Thus my hopes for a unique set twist or perhaps some explanations for many of the mysteries in the series were dashed.

Don’t earn me dismal – I adore this series. The artwork is astounding and the soundtrack inspired (thank god for Yoko Kanno – she is hands down my celebrated anime composer today) . But there is so considerable to be explored in this tale! I’m very disappointed that Studio Bones wasted 4 hours of vital place development time to a recap. Perhaps it was money related – I don’t know the details. What I do know is that as a fan of this series, I wish that these episodes could have been former to originate the fable rather than objective throwing in veteran animation.

Bottom line: If you’ve not watched any of the previous episodes, you could accept this DVD and rep up on the legend in only 4 episodes as opposed to 12. But who’d want to?

Unless you are one of those people (like me) who speed out and acquire every disk of a series you like lawful when it comes out, please honest build your money. This disk is a complete dissapointment, and I’m sorry that I spent money on it. I waited and waited to salvage it only to derive out that it’s entirely flashbacks! I can understand one recap episode to sum things up, but four? No, thank you. It won’t end me from getting the next one though, it’s a extraordinary series, i objective hope that there’s recent stuff on the next disk ^_^

I remember watching Tales From the Crypt when I was younger, and decided to obtain the whole 7 seasons. Some seasons seem a whole lot better than others but overall it is a righteous recall and will support you entertained for a long time!

MGM does a expansive job in restoring this 1952 comedy classic to DVD perfection!!! Presented in Black/White, Standard Cover size (4:3 tv aspect ratio – before WideScreen (1953) ) .

This was Spencer Tracy’s & Katherine Hepburn’s 7th film together and as always are Classic Team mates!!! Now digitally remastered and on DVD makes it even better. Flawlessly digitalized makes the portray quality absolutely extraordinary to sight. Hepburns athletism can be more appreciated especially during the golf scenes when she drives the balls into the far distance (only now can we inspect these little spheres in the distance with DVD clarity!) .

Summary; Masterfully directed by George Cukor, Athletic Pat (Hepburn) plays a very skillful amateur female sports nut who seems trapped in a rich socialite engaged to be married life. Mike (Tracy) a sports promoter eyes Hepburn in a Pro-Amatuer Golf match & sees a gold mine to be had. Hustling her to turn pro & be his client Hepburn decides this is a map to hasten her dejected dominating fiances & to be married life. Hepburn shows hows some extraordinary athletic talents in golf & tennis. Tracy & Hepburn are a vast pair to observe & Hollywoods 1950’s jubilant ending prevails. This is a keeper and the DVD is a beauty!

Pat & Mike is large family entertainment & Katherine Hepburn shows how women can be independent (wearing slacks), athletic (improbable golfer& tennis player) & feminine (radiant & vunerable) all in one. Relish.

PAT & MIKE is the seventh Tracy-Hepburn collaboration, and it stars Spencer Tracy as Mike Conovan, the moneyminded sports racketeer with a heart of gold, and Katharine Hepburn (looking a astronomical deal younger than she did in 1951’s THE AFRICAN QUEEN) as his handsome ‘property’, Pat Pemberton. Pat is an all-round ‘lady athlete’, adept at golf and tennis (not to mention shooting, basketball and presumably swimming), but completely frazzled whenever her fiance Collier Weld (a suitably smarmy William Ching) is around and watching her. In a convey to become more in control of herself and her life, she (contrarily) submits to Mike’s management and he takes her around the country as a golf and tennis pro. It doesn’t rob grand imagination to realise what happens next–Mike’s ‘handling’ of Pat is the kind of handling she’s willing to derive (switch ‘Tracy’ for ‘Mike’ and ‘Hepburn’ for ‘Pat’ and you score also a description of Tracy and Hepburn’s real-life relationship), and before long, Collier is dazzling powerful left in the dust.

This film is evidently a star vehicle for Tracy and Hepburn, containing next to no artistic pretensions or even any steady attempt to press a subtle feminist point (in incompatibility with other Tracy/Hepburn films like WOMAN OF THE YEAR or ADAM’S RIB) . In fact, the film seems to be unprejudiced a comfortable, familiar joke between actors, writers and audience–we know these characters, we know these actors, we know what kind of relationship they always have (bantering, sparring, and in the raze unprejudiced a perfect fit) … the only thing that’s different is the names of the characters. Sam, Adam, Mike–Tess, Amanda, Pat–what’s the disagreement?

To be blooming, Hepburn’s character of Pat Pemberton is worthy softer and more vulnerable than either Tess Harding or Amanda Bonner. This character variation doesn’t screen the proper point of the screenplay though–Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin evidently wanted a chance to exhibit both Hepburn’s natural athletic abilities (phenomenal for a non-professional, but possibly not 100% believable against sports stars like Babe Zaharias) and her amazing legs. Well, they did succeed at both of these things, to mammoth achieve. It’s mountainous fun for a Hepburn fan, having read about her deep and abiding care for of any and all sports, to rep a chance to actually stare her playing golf and tennis onscreen. (This doesn’t mean, of course, that the frequent and long golf scenes don’t test one’s patience occasionally!)

Spencer Tracy has large fun as Mike as well, the sports agent who originally wants Pat to flub a game and near in second. He claims early on in the film that the grief with her is that she’s got too fair a face–it’s only Tracy’s ability to obtain rough-and-tumble characters believably vulnerable at heart that makes his later declaration (”I must have caught something from you” i.e. honesty) acceptable. The chemistry between the two is probably closer to the comfortable rapport they shared in ADAM’S RIB as man and wife than the fireworks that went off between them in WOMAN OF THE YEAR. Whatever the case, it is detached always a joy to scrutinize Tracy and Hepburn together onscreen, and it’s largely because this film stars who it does that you can allow yourself to luxuriate in and be taken in by what is evidently a cutesy star vehicle written by the stars’ friends (Gordon and Kanin), and directed by the leading lady’s best and favourite director George Cukor. (Some of the visual tricks, particularly Hepburn’s face appearing on that of a horse, are actually more disturbing than flattering, and I–for one–would pick not to pursue the metaphor through to its raze.) Tracy and Hepburn are also boosted by an ample supporting cast, particularly William Ching as Pat’s cross suitor and Aldo Ray as Mike’s dimwitted star protege (until Pat comes along, that is!) .

PAT & MIKE is a romantic comedy, but it’s also romantic-comedy-*lite*. There are no forced or deceptive separations that are geared towards wringing tears from viewers before a reconciliation (incompatibility again with ADAM’S RIB and most formulaic films in unusual years) . The film is fair a dinky section of gratified fluff–not taxing at all for either the writers, the actors, or the viewers. For a incandescent laughable set-piece, recognize out for the scene in which Pat takes on the two seedy sports racketeers and dispenses them with considerable ease and efficiency. Otherwise, recognize PAT & MIKE with the knowledge that this is neither Tracy and Hepburn’s best, nor is it their worst. Allow me to quote from my review of “Four Christmases,” released only a few weeks ago: “I don’t need to expend $8.75 to be told that we should use time with our loved ones, even if they’re completely insane. By now, I assume we all know.” As distinguished as I own this to be factual, films like “Nothing Like the Holidays” note that even well established messages can unexcited be effective. This movie is everything “Four Christmases” was not: silly, touching, and shining, with drama that actually feels marvelous. While it gives us unbiased about everything we’ve approach to question from the typical holiday movie, it makes the most of what it’s got, and I have a feeling that fair about everyone will collect it relatable to definite degree. “Nothing Like the Holidays” tells the record of the Rodriguez family and the drama that befalls them during the Christmas holiday. He certainly won’t be getting any relieve from Mauricio, who has always felt that Jesse had virtually everything handed to him.

The sister, Roxanna (Vanessa Ferlito), is an actress visiting from Los Angeles. While she has managed a few diminutive roles, she has yet to regain her colossal smash. Intertwined with all this are a couple of minor subplots, including the Rodriguez’s outspoken cousin, Johnny (Luis Guzmán), Marissa’s relationship with a recent man, and Roxanna’s friend, Ozzy (Jay Hernandez), a venerable gang member who quiet has some unfinished business. There are also a few spirited scenes with a tree that’s been standing on the Rodriguez’s front lawn for years. Anna has always wanted it cleave down; it doesn’t give her a belief. Attempts to demolish it only perform its metaphor for family all the more obvious–it may by curved, obstructive, and unbiased insensible shocking, but it’s also indestructible and deeply rooted. Messages like this are expected in holiday movies, and I can’t fool myself into believing that “Nothing Like the Holidays” gives us anything unusual in the map of family drama. But I also can’t tell the fact that the filmmakers made it work. This movie, for all intents and purposes, feels authentic from beginning to waste. It’s amusing at times, yet it never goes for a series of cheap laughs. It’s dark at times, yet it doesn’t resort to overblown moments of melodrama. It gave me the gift of an delightful movie going experience, and I’m clear it will do the same for you.

This is a fun movie – lots of hilarious moments with a tall ensemble cast. You win the feeling that the actors had a lot of fun when they did this film.

Beside being comical it also makes some considerable statements about family life, forgiveness, healing and accepting our humanness.

An altogether warm viewing experience – something there for every generation!

The Holiday Special is all about the importance of recycling. At one point, for example, the kids are shown how distinguished of the Bus is from recycled products; glass and aluminum, etc.

The Rainforest myth hinges around cocoa and coca trees– something I contemplate most kids can represent to. The kids and Ms. Frizzle head off to rainforest when they can’t acquire hot cocoa to come by up “what’s up”. A apt explanation of the interrelationship of creatures and plants (ecology) follows.

All dried up is about the desert and how although the desert environment is hostile and difficult that there are animals and plants that live there because of their adaptations.

Though these tales are for older kids, I have been showing them to my 4 year ragged. She probably misses the pleasing nuances, but she has definitely gotten the major themes and it gives us a starting point to talk about animals and plants and why it is section of her job to befriend me with the recycling.

Some of the Magic School Bus stories are frenetic, by the draw, but these collections seem to be less so. (i.e. they don’t send my kids crawling up the wall.)

The days of paying an arm and a leg for G1 Transformers episodes are over. Weep! Factory, LLC, in conjunction with Hasbro, has released the complete first season of Transformers: The Unusual Series, and it’s a helpful product! It’s also at a great heed, which those who have paid extremely high prices for earlier releases (such as myself) are certain to like.

Packaging: 4 out of 5

It would have been nice if the packaging received the royal treatment that the new He-Man and She-Ra cartoons received; however this is not so terrible. Orderly, recent artwork printed on a metallic coating gives the box a highly heavenly and novel look; the discs are safely encased in two slim DVD cases (made of soft, shatter-resistant polypropylene), each of which boasts 2-sided artwork visible through the sleeves and the translucent packaging.

Integrity To The Modern Episodes: 5 out of 5.

These are the episodes the plan I remember seeing them; on VHS tape from my local video store, with a high level of faithfulness to the unusual sound and visuals. Those familiar with the Rhino releases earlier this decade may be glad to hear that the *original* soundtrack is presented here (remixed in stereo) without any additional sound effects. Care has also been taken to reconstruct the show’s visuals; “Heavy Metal War” in particular has been restored to its fresh greatness, after a painful stint on the Rhino collection, on which the episode was marred by poorly-chosen takes replate with visual errors.

Episode quality and encoding: 4 out of 5.

Each DVD is 7.6 GB in size, and every byte appears to be taken in a high-quality encode of these episodes. Bit rate (a strong determinant of quality on standard DVD) varies from around 4800kbps to objective over 6000 kbps during playback. The encoding is not perfect; an observant look will spy compression artifacts expose up often on backgrounds and matte paintings; thankfully, characters and fascinating scenes expose up with about as grand clarity as the transfer probably allowed.

Special features: 3 out of 5 stars

The extras are fully contained on disc 3 of this collection, which I like because it leaves vital site on the other two discs for high-quality episode encoding. However, the features advance up a bit short in my thought. Though the 20-minute documentary is all-new, it is not as thorough as I hoped it would be or as the packaging suggests. Also this documentary lacked any contribution from the unusual screech actors, whose involvement strikes me as well-known for a five-star special features disc. A printable copy of the “Transport To Oblivion” script (also available on the aging Rhino relase), three Hasbro toy commercials and one PSA (Public Service Announcement) manufacture up the reminder of this light special features share. Hopefully Bawl! Factory will continue to release the new series on DVD, in which case there are colossal opportunities for further special features.

All in all, this is a mammoth product at a gigantic mark, and bears the closest resemblance to the unique broadcast episodes I have seen thus far. Looking forward to future relases, possibly someday on Blu-Ray.

A lot of us grew up on the Generation One or G1 Transformer’s long before a live action film about giant transforming robots could have been belief possible. The animation may not have been the best on this series but in the eighties it’s all we needed and our active imaginations filled in the rest. Despite the older less impressive animation these episodes are unruffled classics to those who remember them and will be more palatable for most of us than the many spinoffs that followed the G1 series. There was something innocent about the series here, maybe because it was so early before the fact that each episode was really honest a half hour commercial became accepted knowledge, maybe because here they actually looked like robots in disguise, but maybe honest because they are the ones most of us grew up on and where the whole lasting franchise found it’s niche.

Fans should be very enraged to fill these episodes in a original more affordable place. The space is being achieve out by Yowl! Factory and they have always done an advantageous job of providing fans with a lot of well done special features on long awaited sets. This area was originally announced as having a few special features included with more possibly in the works but I’m very happy to recognize the amount that they have now announced for it and have updated this review to include them. Alot of people who didn’t win the more expensive novel sets are going to be enraged at the chance to procure this one and I know that I can’t wait. I originally gave this location 5 stars honest for the opportunity to maintain these classic episodes in a helpful DVD location, but after hearing that they will in fact be restored to recent broadcast versions with a unique stereo soundtrack created from the recent audio I’m more exasperated than ever.

Some may say that this series was objective the next step in a titanic advertising campaign for children’s toys but those of us who grew up being entertained by it know that there truly is more to this series than meets the watch. Thanks For Your Time.
